What to Wear for Your Session: Newborn, Maternity, and Family Photography in Columbia, Missouri
Hey, friends! If you’re gearing up for your newborn, maternity, or family photo session here in Columbia, Missouri, one of the most common questions I get is: “What should we wear?” Trust me, choosing the right outfits can make a huge difference in how your photos turn out. So, let’s chat about some simple, stylish tips to help you look and feel amazing — and get the most out of your session with me!
Keep It Neutral (Seriously, It Works!)
When I say neutral colors, I mean those soft, earthy tones like tans, browns, creams, and gentle greens. These colors photograph beautifully and create a timeless look that won’t distract from your gorgeous family moments. I recently had a newborn session where mom wore the most beautiful powered blue. I would have never dreamed that blue would photograph that well, but it was a soft neutral, so it fit the palette. It was just outside my norm. Now I’m obsessed with it!
Here’s why neutrals are the way to go:
They keep the focus on you and your family, not your clothes.
They blend well with natural outdoor settings here in Columbia, like the locations I love to use.
Neutral tones are super flattering on all skin tones and ages.
Colors to Avoid: white, red, orange and anything loud or distracting.
I know white sounds classic, but it often doesn’t photograph well—sometimes it picks up weird blue hues in photos. Red and orange? Those colors can reflect onto your skin and mess with natural skin tones. So, it's best to steer clear of those for your newborn, maternity, or family session.
Mom’s Outfit Is the Star of the Show
Mom, this one’s for you! You’re the heart of the session, so your outfit should be comfortable, flowy, and a real statement piece. Think long, flowing dresses or maxi skirts that make you feel beautiful and relaxed. Avoid anything too short, restrictive, or awkwardly cut (like those weird shin-length dresses). You want to move, feel comfy, and shine!
Coordinate, Don’t Match
A big no-no? Everyone wearing the exact same outfit or color. Instead, coordinate your family’s wardrobe around mom’s outfit. That way, your photos have depth and cohesion without looking like a uniform!
Dad’s outfit is usually pretty simple — a neutral-colored shirt and pants works perfectly. For kids, feel free to add a bit of personality with patterns, textures, or layers like vests and jewelry. These little details bring your photos to life and help tie everything together.
Why Coordinated Outfits Matter
Coordinating rather than matching:
Creates a more natural, relaxed vibe.
Adds visual interest and texture to your photos.
Makes post-production easier and helps your photos look polished and timeless.
Bonus Tip: Think About the Location and Season
Since I shoot a lot here in Columbia, Missouri, it’s good to think about your surroundings when picking your wardrobe. If we’re outside in the fall, layering is your friend. In spring or summer, lighter fabrics and breathable layers keep everyone comfy and if we are in my cozy studio downtown right on Broadway then dressing for your surroundings isn’t a factor in your outfit making decisions!
