How I Prepare for Your Newborn Session: A Thoughtful, Calm, and Personalized Experience

As a newborn photographer based in Columbia, Missouri, I believe that your baby's first portraits should feel just as special as the tiny miracle you're welcoming into the world. My goal is to make each session a calm, meaningful experience that leaves families not only with beautiful images, but with lasting memories of a peaceful, love-filled day.

Every newborn session begins long before I pick up the camera.

1. Helping You Choose the Perfect Outfits

One of the first steps in preparing for your session is guiding you through selecting outfits that will photograph beautifully, suit your family’s style, and flatter everyone’s unique body type. I offer plenty of tips and visuals, so you feel confident and excited about how you'll look and feel in front of the camera.

2. Getting to Know Your Family

After a color palette has been selected, I ask for the names of everyone attending the session — including older siblings — so I can start thinking about the dynamics and moments we’ll want to capture. Knowing your family ahead of time helps me create a more personal and relaxed experience for everyone.

3. Detailed Prep Guidance

Once you're booked, you'll receive a comprehensive email outlining what to bring and how to prepare. From favorite pacifiers and white noise machines to snacks and outfit changes — nothing is left to guesswork. My goal is to make the day as seamless and low-stress as possible for everyone.

4. Curating Every Detail for Your Baby

I carefully select wraps, outfits, and accessories for your newborn ahead of time based on the palette and mood we’ve discussed. All linens and wraps are freshly laundered with sensitive-skin-friendly detergents, and I style the set with hand-picked props like baskets, pillows, and textures that enhance — not overpower — the purity of your baby’s first days.

5. Reviewing Your Inspiration

The night before the session, I review the inspiration photos you've shared to make sure I'm fully aligned with your vision. This helps me enter the session with a clear plan and an eye for the moments that matter most to you.

6. Setting the Scene

The morning of your session, I arrive at the studio an hour or two early to turn on the heat and create a cozy environment for your little one. I play soft, comforting music to create a serene atmosphere — not just for the baby, but for you as well.

7. The Session Begins

When you arrive, I go over everything one more time — I’ll ask you to show me any personal outfits you'd like included, check for the essentials (like your baby's pacifier), and then we begin. This is where the magic happens.

Moms are often amazed watching me wrap their babies so gently, using techniques I’ve perfected over time to soothe, settle, and keep babies comfortable and secure. The way I transition them into different outfits or poses is always done with the utmost care and respect for their tiny cues. And even when emotions run high or things feel unpredictable, I remain a calm, grounding presence in the room — always focused on capturing the beauty of your family just as you are.

A Story Worth Sharing

Every session is different, and I embrace that fully. I remember one session where a sweet 5-year-old son was feeling overwhelmed and rejected his dad's cuddles. The dad, frustrated, said out loud, “He won’t let me get close to him!” I gently stepped in, said “That’s totally okay,” and captured a tender moment between mom and her two sons instead. Later, we positioned the older child next to mom while dad snuggled in from the other side — and the final image turned out to be one of the parents’ favorites.

Moments like that remind me that photography isn’t just about perfect poses — it’s about meeting families where they are, honoring their emotions, and finding beauty in the in-between.

If you're looking for a newborn photographer who takes care of every detail and creates a peaceful, love-filled experience for your family, I would be honored to be part of your journey.
